Robert's retreat is exactly what our family needed to get away from our ticky-tacky suburban lifestyle. Our dog could run free as could our kids. Yes it was colder/wetter than we hoped and being from the south put as at odds with nature but we enjoyed the wonderful wide open out doors in small sprints. From walking the hanging foot bridge over and over to teaching my girls to cast and reel their first rod. We lit a fire the first night and the negative ions had the effect i had hoped for. My kids read and relaxed for bedtime. Robert is the epitome of "hospitality " always a few minutes away via chat to answer questions and provide guidance. I did learn that the Airbnb policy indicates that it is incumbent on the renter to provide their own firewood. Robert was gracious enough to supply wood for our first night but something you should consider logistically if staying more than a day during winter. We look forward to enjoying Robert's retreat again. Clan Milligan

It is a really nice, peaceful place, with beautiful surroundings, great host, place is close to many outdoor activities.

This exceeded our expectations! Beautifully appointed. Diane must have used an interior decorator. We had "welcome" treats waiting for us. Spotlessly clean! Culpepper was a charming town to explore. Great restaurants.

We had a wonderful stay! The beds were super comfortable, the view of the river was beautiful, and it was so peaceful and quiet. The hot tub was a great bonus, and the hosts were very responsive and thoughtful — they even offered firewood, s'mores kits, and emergency toiletries in case you forgot anything. Check-in and check-out were a breeze, and the place was very clean. There were a few hornet nests around the property (we picked up some spray), and being near the water, there were some gnats — but nothing a little bug spray and a small fire couldn't fix! Tip for future guests: the coffee maker is a Keurig style, so bring your favorite K-cups or your own coffee setup. Also, there are caverns, golf courses, and plenty of restaurants within about 20 minutes. Overall, a great spot for a relaxing getaway!

I’ve been in some more rustic conditions with Airbnb lately, but this house was clean and in good condition overall. It was right by the water and just perfect for what we needed.

Hap and Jennie's place is perfect! Spectacular views, stunning property, spacious rooms (with plenty of comfortable seating and super comfy beds!), stocked with everything you can think of and more...The games room was fantastic & the guide book was helpful...we could go on and on!! We also appreciated the opportunity to bring along our dog who also had a great time (she enjoyed listening to and watching the many birds as much as we did). Hap & Jennie were immediately responsive and informative any time we had questions, too. This is an outstanding place with phenomenal hosts and we hope to return. HIGHLY recommend!

This was a lovely, peaceful spot! We enjoyed the proximity to Shenandoah National Park for hiking. The river was an added bonus! The house had absolutely everything we could have needed from spices to nightlights to great wifi.

A very lovely house to stay in with a beautiful location. My husband loved being able to fish in the river. We would definitely stay here again if we came back to the area.

My husband and I had a wonderful 4 night getaway. The location was peaceful and serene. We enjoy the open grass area, walking along the river and just sitting on the patio enjoy the view. We coordinated to have a couples massage with Tom at the house which was awesome! We didn’t want to leave. We will definitely look to stay at Zen River Retreat next time we are back out that way! This was our 3rd time spending Spring Break at this amazing house. It is the perfect spot for a big family to spend time together. The game room, kayaks, and land is fantastic and you feel so far away from everything. at the same time, there are grocery stores, restaurants, and shops only 10 minutes away. ❤️ It is the perfect spot!

Firnew Cottage is surrounded by a beautiful setting. My kids loved walking to the river and playing there. We all loved having Firnew’s dog Louie visit us daily. I found picturesque views everywhere while walking the grounds and trails. We were also in a great location to drive out for hikes. Thank you to Alex, David and Trish for being such friendly hosts.
