Food Scene

Fresh, home made food is prepared by local ladies. Standard fare for the ordinary citizen or traveler, and some adventurous twists and local ingredients keep your attention! One favorite that they whip up daily is croquettes featuring fresh herbs or ground mountain boar.

This small hole-in-the-wall shop is open most on weekends in the high season whenever the sweet granny who runs it feels like coming in and opening up! With few places in town, regular travelers heading down the highway home find the simple, cheap quaintness hits the spot and its mainstay- cold beer and simple bowls of something hit the spot to help them get back on the road again. No frills, no fancy napkins but if you need a cold one and a friendly chatty visit with the owner, this place will do fine.

This restaurant has a fantastic view. Perched atop the Biwako Valley cable car line, it makes a fine ending or break to a fabulous day.

If you want the authentic experience of yakitori sitting in a tiny pub with friends, then stop in here. Not far from Shiga station if you are not a hiker, but not a bad walk from the house along the highway if you are. Nothing fancy, but quintessentially Japan!

You'll find European bread heaven in the middle of nowhere here- just be sure to get there early enough in the day. They stick around until the last loaf or danish sells! There are a couple of small tables, but it is just across from the station and the bus stop heading to Biwako Valley, so lots of folks just load up on their lovely breads before heading out or heading back to the hotel.

This place is an easy stop on your way up or down from the beautiful Biwako Valley. Although it is well known and often has a healthy amount of cars in the parking lot, it doesn't stay open late, so don't pop over for a late night cuppa java.

Sushi and Japanese Confectionery. It is good for a new experience in Japan, or great if you enjoy the mochi and bean paste confectioneries. Worth a try if you are in Hira and need something to power the rest of your day!

This is the hands-down favorite in my book for an authentic Japanese dining experience. It is the quintessential Japanese family restaurant with a range of dishes. Everything is made authentically with the kind of old-style methods and flavors that will never go out of style. If you are headed hiking up the trails or just back from the Yobaino Falls, this is a great pit stop!
