Relaxing activity

One of my favourite beaches is Point. You can walk there from our house via lower point parking lot or drive down Da Gama road and turn nto Pagoda street, turn right into the Point Beach parking lot. Point beach is in front of this parking lot. I like to take an umbrella, picnic blanket , good book and some snacks and settle in on the beach. Often parents come with their kids and dogs and play in the rock pools. If there are some waves, you will also see surfers paddling out for a surf. I swim in the gully and then dry off under my umbrella. Early in the day, especially in summer, is usually beautiful and less windy.

A beautiful beach called "lang sand" or long beach. Walk from our house and down the pathway to the beach between the houses or drive down Da Gama Rd and turn right into Kabeljauws Rd. Park at the lagoon and take yourself on a walk. You can walk for hours down the beach. It is safe and unspoilt. Early mornings you will be very likely to bump into people who are walking their dogs on the beach. On weekends there are fisherman along the beach as well. We also recommend renting a "fat bike". This is a bicycle with fat tyres that are suitable for riding on the beach. This activity is especially nice on the weekends, early morning (or wind-less days) around low tide, when the sand is more hard. You can contact Tyron to book a fat bike: 083 661 5393. In some seasons, there are flamingos on the lagoon and you may see people in kayaks or exploring the beach via horses. If there is enough water in the lagoon, it makes a great place to hang out and swim with little children, since the water is calm and there is a gradual slope, meaning there is lots of shallow water spots. Be sure to take an umbrella if you want to do this with the kids since there are no trees to provide shade.

There is a beautiful reserve along the Kabeljous lagoon which is a very short drive just outside Jeffreys bay. There are signs of where to park and a map with all the trails in the reserve. A nice trail is to the look-out point which takes you up on the dunes overlooking Jeffreys Bay. You can also take one of the trails to the beach and go for a swim. The Kabeljouse Reserve Action Group (KRAG) organises full moon walks every month. It is a fun activity where everyone gathers to eat snacks and watch the full moon rise. Find them on facebook.

A little bit further to drive, but well worth it is the little town of Cape St Francis. As you drive into Cape St Francis, you can park at the parking lot at the end of Rietbok crescent. There you will find beach trails to either side called the wild side trail. You can walk either to the Seal point lighthouse (in the direction of Port Elizabeth) or through a nature reserve (in the direction of Cape Town). The trail runs through beautiful vegetation and stunning rocky shores. We recommend you combine this trip with a lunch at Port St Francis in St Francis Bay. The harbour has many restaurants and it is a delight to see all the fishing boat activity as you enjoy lunch. The Chokka Block is owned by Clive who is very knowledgeable about the area.

Jeffreys Bay is world-famous for its surf-break: Super Tubes. Once a year the world's professional surfers stop here to compete in the world's annual surf tour. This is a beautiful surf break to watch, even if you don't surf. So if there are offshore winds (South-west) and big swell conditions (>3m), take yourself to Super Tubes to watch people surf a beautiful wave. On some sections, in the right conditions, the surfer can disapear in a "tube", meaning the wave is hollow enough that the surfer can surf inside a barrel. This is every surfer's dream and it is fun to see this happen.

Food scene

Ninas has the biggest menu in town that will most likely have something on the menu for you. With the rise in awareness about the benefits of a plant-based diet, Ninas has a separate menu with solely veggie meals. If you have ever wondered about vegetarian or vegan food, but worried it means eating a bowl of lettuce, I would highly recommend giving one of Nina's plant-based meals a go. Of course for those following a plant-based diet, this is heaven.

Owned by seasoned locals, Andrew and Libby, this surf school is right around the corner from Rosa's cottage. You can take a two-hour group surf lesson or a one-on-one session. If you have always wanted to learn to surf, book the week-long course which includes a daily lesson, surfboard and wetsuit.

This is quite a memorable experience. Located 10 km outside of Jbay, Papiesfontein offers you horse rides with experienced guides through fynbos and then along a wild, unspoilt and remote section of beach. It offers some adrenalin and lots of nature beauty. The guides provide you with a horse that suits your "riding" abilities.

This sea trip is offered in Port Elizabeth but can easily be turned into a day-trip from Jeffreys Bay. Many people take this commute every day to work. Alternatively, make it a one-night stop on your way to Addo or Kruger. Climb on a boat and explore the ocean around Algoa bay, known as the Bottlenose Dolphin capital of the world. Not guaranteed, but potential to see a plethora of sea life including whales, dolphins and birds including the critically threatened African penguin ( a real cutie). It is advisable to bring a jacket for sea spray and wind.
