Sightseeing

From the Melrose, head right towards the beach and walk about .2 miles until you reach the boardwalk. The first section of beach is reserved for surfers and boogie boarders. For swimming and relaxing in the sand, walk another 100 feet to the right and enter the beach. Beaches are open to the public for free every day after 4:00 PM. Before 4:00, the beaches require a pass to enter. Passes are sold through the Viply App at a cost of $11/ day per person and are limited due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Fortunately, The Melrose has access to passes for $6/day and sells them for cost to all of our interested guests. If you want to guarantee your entry to the beach, simply send us a message during booking and we will have the beach passes waiting for you in your room upon arrival. *Please be aware that Ocean Grove beaches open at noon on Sunday.

From the Melrose, head right towards the beach. When you get to the boardwalk, turn left towards Asbury Park and walk through the “Asbury Park Casino.” Here you will find street performers (both solo artists and often full bands) playing incredible live music. Sit and enjoy a few songs by the water. The Casino itself, acts like a local art gallery, featuring dozens of images to capture your imagination and set the mood as you enter the ever eclectic Asbury Park Boardwalk. Enjoy!

Head left from The Melrose towards the walking bridge across Wesley Lake into Asbury Park. Once across the bridge make a left and walk one block up to Grand Ave. Head down Grand for 1/2 block until you reach Cookman Ave and make a left. You have officially reached downtown Asbury Park. The Bonney Read is located across the street on the first intersection. This is our favorite local restaurant. Primarily known for it's seafood. We suggest you start with the Burrata, which is both creamy and delicious, or the mixed salad, which is as simple as it is tasteful. For an entree, look no further than the "Catch of the Day" (Salmon is amazing if they have it) or Linguine with Clam Sauce. Either dish will not disappoint. On weekends, The Bonney Read offers outdoor seating. Perfect spot to sit and watch people coming and going through downtown Asbury Park. *Be warned. The Bonnie Read is closed on Tuesdays and does not open before 4:00 in the afternoon.

From The Melrose head left to the end of Seaview Ave and then left again onto Central Ave. Walk nine short blocks until you get to Main Ave. You’re officially in downtown Ocean Grove! Make a right and walk one block until you reach Burbelmaiers on your right. About a 10 minute walk through beautiful and historic Ocean Grove. Burbelmaiers is basically pie heaven. Savory pies, sweet pies, meat pies, vegan pies. They have it all and each tastes better than the last. We love the chicken tikka Marsala, packed with authentic Indian flavors. The veggie korma is equally exquisite. On special occasions, Burbelmaiers ups the anty. Try the Beef Wellington for two, or the Huntsman, which typically features wild game (duck, pheasant, wild boar). You’d be hard pressed to find a pie with more pleasure packed into each bite. Finally, try the double chocolate cookies with sea salt for dessert. You’ll thank us later. This place is both incredible and one of a kind! Perfect spot for lunch during a walk around the charming downtown. *Be aware of the hours/days of operation and the fact that they can and will sell out of the special offerings. You can order in advance through their website. We suggest you do.

We love this place! It’s only a few short blocks away from The Melrose (head diagonally across Founders Park and one block passed the Great Auditorium). It’s good, no matter the time of day. Looking for a morning pick me up, they offer over 80 varieties of loose tea to choose from. Need a refreshing drink on a hot summer day, they have delicious fresh brewed ice teas. The cucumber and mint based special is incredible. We also loved the blueberry infused oolong iced tea. Ask for a taste test. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable.

Head diagonally across Founders Park and two blocks passed The Great Auditorium to Main Street. SeaGrass is across the street to your right. About a 10 minute walk. SeaGrass offers a nice combination of “surf”or “turf”. The lobster provides a generous portion. The NY Strip steak is tender and comes with a side salad. Our personal favorite is the roasted duck. Half a roasted duck on a bed of mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach, all drizzled in a raspberry reduction sauce. Delicious! ***Did we mention it’s BYOB?!?!****

If you’re looking for amazing Cuban food, look no further than the Cuban Cafe. We recommend driving there to get the full experience. The Cuban with it’s moist pulled pork and buttery toasted bread is delicious. The sweet plantains add the perfect compliment.

Sushi 🍣 is a regular part of our diet. Taka transforms delicious and fresh fish into beautifully artistic servings. Taka also specializes in delivering Japanese infused flavors into dishes rarely seen on a Japanese menu. We highly recommend the braised short ribs. Drizzled in a ginger based sauce and paired with Wasabi mashed potatoes, these tender short ribs pack tremendous flavor into each delicious bite. A unique taste and generous portion make this a must try for anyone who enjoys Japanese cuisine! Directions: Head left from The Melrose towards the walking bridge across Wesley Lake into Asbury Park. Continue down Cookman until you reach Bond Street. Taka is on your left at the corner of Bond and Cookman.
