Informazioni sulla città/località

Salerno has a long history. Probably of Etruscan origin. In 194 b.C. it was a Roman colony and was named Salernum. The city was later occupied by Goths, Byzantines, Longobards and Normans. Thanks to the historical changement there is the birth of the Principality of Salerno, governed by the Duke Arechi II, who will have his residence in the magnificent and majestic castle that now has its name and that stands above the hill where the Castrum Salerni was located. Under his rule Salerno grew to great splendour becoming a centre of studies with its famous Medical School: the Schola Medica Salernitana, the most important source of medical knowledge in Europe in the early Middle Ages. Monuments to see : " Duomo di Salerno " Piazza Alfano I, 84125 Salerno SA " Giardini della minerva "(made by the most ancient medical school to cultivate medical plants) Vicolo Ferrante Sanseverino, n° 1, 84121 Salerno SA " Castello arechi ( arechi castle, the one you see on the hill upstair salerno ) " Also i suggest you to take a walk on " lungomare " the promenade in salerno center and stop at " Santa Teresa Beach " for a fresh drink. Then enjoy the view of the new square " piazza della libertà " which was made only recently. If you want to go shopping around check out the beatiful little road in salerno historic centre called " Via mercanti " filled with jewelry and clothing boutique. From there you can head towards " corso di Salerno ".
