Fillmore is our favorite neighborhood coffee shop, and a quick walk from the apartment. The espresso drinks are consistently fantastic (they use Coava espresso beans), and the atmosphere is laid-back and family-friendly. If you need a nosh, the bagel sandwiches and pizza are delicious and prices reasonable. They also have kombucha, beer, wine, and cider.

We’re lucky to have such a great pizzeria just a few blocks blocks away. East Glisan has great New York style crust and fresh toppings like eggplant and Calabrian hot peppers. We usually build our own large pie and mix and match what sounds good. Every night starting @ 10pm, they do cheese slices for $1 when you buy a drink. Good cocktails too.

This is our go-to special occasion restaurant in the neighborhood. The kitchen stays open till 11pm and serves consistently high quality americana. The burgers and fries are ace. So are the prawn skewers. The cheese platter appetizer is enough to feed four and includes house cured bacon. It’s usually busy, so the vibe is loud, convivial, and fun. Down the hallway inside the restaurant you can access a secondary space called Over and Out, which has the same menu and drinks plus pool tables and pinball machines.

Great place for brunch. We are suckers for their Chilaquiles (fried tortillas, roasted chicken, eggs up, salsas, yummmm), Huevos Rancheros, and Fried Oatmeal Waffles. And if you’re feeling saucy, get some Blueberry fritters to start. Warning - STRONG coffee. We usually add 1-2 creamers.

Summer means Sundays at the Farmer’s Market! From June to October, the market takes over the lot at 76th and SE Stark (right across from Mr. Plywood) from 10am-2pm. Great assortment of homemade craft food vendors from within the city and surrounding farms, including cheeses, meats, breads, pastries, and booze. If you’re a carnivore, don’t miss grilled samples from Scratch Meats (the best sausages) and Olympic Provisions (the second-best sausages). The tamales from Mixteca are huge and good fuel. There’s usually live music and everyone will give you samples.

Arts & Culture
This is the largest authentic Chinese garden in the western hemisphere (a whole city block), and it was built stone-by-stone by Chinese artisans in the traditional styles. This is an absolutely magical place to feel transported to a far away place, even though you're right in the mix of downtown Portland. The teahouse in the large pagoda does tea ceremonies and serves lovely snacks. This place is beautiful rain or shine, but we secretly love going on rainy days to watch how the raindrops fall from the roof tiles into the water below.
