The highlight of the 163-acre Eden Gardens State Park is the Historic Wesley House, where you can learn about the family who built it, one of the first to settle in the Point Washington area. Built in 1897, the home is a beautiful two-story mansion with dramatic white columns and a classic wrap-around porch. The majestic home, surrounded with mossy live oaks, will take you to a bygone era of southern prosperity. You’ll also learn about the home’s benefactress, Ms. Lois Maxon, who purchased it and renovated it extensively before donating the property to the Florida Park Service in 1968. Another highlight of the park is the beautifully manicured ornamental gardens. Including a heritage rose garden, butterfly garden, and secret garden with paths winding through the grounds, the early spring months are an enviable time to visit Eden Gardens State Park Florida and see it in bloom. Originally designed and planned for Ms. Maxon, the gardens and grounds feature showstopping azaleas and over 250 camellias. Wander through the grounds and you might even find yourself at a quiet reflection pond, filled with koi fish and water lilies. If you want to go fishing or paddling on the Intracoastal Waterway or the Choctawhatchee Bay, the park has a boat launch on Tucker Bayou, which connects to both bodies of water. Other activities include hiking, picnicking, and a screened pavilion with kitchen and bathroom that is available to rent for meetings or reunions.

There’s no better way to get “up close and personal” with South Walton than a bike ride along the Timpoochee Trail. The approximately 18.5-mile trail, named after an influential Euchee Indian Chief, winds past dune lakes and state parks and beach access points through several charming beach neighborhoods. It’s a perfect day trip for the family, an ideal way to get some exercise, and a whole lot of fun. The trail parallels the entire length of Scenic Highway 30A from Dune Allen to Inlet Beach and is safe, wide, and relatively flat. Rental bikes are available from several shops along the length of the trail. You can rent bikes by the day, but if you’re staying somewhere along 30A you might want to rent them for the entire week. After one ride along the Timpoochee, your bike may become the preferred mode of transportation at the beach.

Funky and eclectic Grayton Beach’s unofficial motto is “Nice Dogs, Strange People.” As one of South Walton’s original beach neighborhoods, Grayton Beach is known as a creative haven for artists, musicians, chefs, or anyone who wants to escape convention and live the beach lifestyle. Bustling with life, Grayton Beach is home to art galleries, a world-famous funky dive bar (The Red Bar) and endless natural beauty at Grayton Beach State Park, which surrounds the neighborhood on three sides. Breakfast at Crackings or Black Bear Bread Company – don’t miss out on the house-made pastries –is a great way to kick-off your day. For Gulf views along with tasty eats be sure to stop by Chiringo where the open-air design channels the Gulf breeze, and cold drinks cool customers and complement the laid-back cuisine.

Even if you have never been to Grayton Beach, or stepped foot on Scenic Highway 30A, you may recognize the name The Red Bar. During its 20+ years of operation, this iconic restaurant, bar, and entertainment hub grew into a beloved escape for locals and a must-visit destination for tourists. People came from all over the world to experience its down-to-earth and laid-back atmosphere while enjoying the funky décor, live music, cocktails, and crab cakes. Foreign film posters, red Christmas lights, crystal chandeliers, random street signs, mismatched tables and chairs, and an antique cash register are only a few of the features that made this eclectic scene unique. Its location in the secluded paradise of Grayton Beach just added to the attraction.

Twenty-five years and counting, Seaside’s beloved restaurant and beach-front bar are still making waves. The fish tacos were an immediate hit, not to mention the bar’s offering of close to 50 tequilas and signature margaritas. “Knock the sand off your feet and wash down a spicy taco with a cold cervazas. What’s better than that?” asks Dave. Some might argue there’s some pretty tough competition just around the corner and up the stairs at Bud & Alley’s own Rooftop Bar and recently expanded Sky Deck, a classic waterfront bar overlooking what has to be the most beautiful stretches of beach in the world. Tourist and locals are likely to pop in after a swim in the gulf for a cocktail; it doesn’t matter the time of day or if one’s bathing suit is still wet. Others show up after dark sporting a colorful sundress or white linen. There’s something for everyone. That’s the beauty of Bud & Alley’s.
