One of the best ways to take in the city is with a cruise across Elliot Bay on one of the local commuter ferries. The upper-level decks offer expansive views of the skyline and Olympic range at a fraction of the cost of a private tour. From Coleman Dock you can head to Bainbridge Island (30 min each way) or Bremerton (60 min each way). Bainbridge Island has a cute main street with some great coffee shops and restaurants. There’s less to do in Bremerton proper but I enjoy the longer, more scenic ride.

When Capitol Hill goes to the beach, this is where they go. Weekends attract thongs (oops we meant throngs) of sunbathers and swimmers looking to soak up or beat the heat. Bring your beach towel, SPF, and Bluetooth speaker, cause it’s always a party. Floating piers and diving boards offer a great way to cool off. Gays congregate to the north of the beach house, straights to the south.

The stretch of Lake Washington Boulevard from I90 to Seward Park doubles as a hike and bike trail offering lovey views over the lake. Currently closed to auto traffic on weekends it offers a refuge for runners, walkers, and cyclists to take over the streets. “The Hill” is regarded by many as the heart and soul of the city. Home to the Seattle’s nightlife scene, Capitol Hill is really a collection of many sub neighborhoods with distinct personalities. Most of the raucous fun is located along Pike and Pine Streets between I5 and Madison. Here you’ll find a concentration of some of the most hopping bars, restaurants, clubs and shops. Distinct commercial corridors on 15th between Thomas and Roy and on Broadway between John and Roy offer additional Main Street feels with lots to see. Menander north to the blocks adjacent to Volunteer Park to see some of the most stately turn of the century homes in the city.
