Food Scene

Our absolute favourite. Great atmosphere. Trish, Frank, Stephen and Maryann are friends of ours. Tell them Marg and Steve Hogan suggested you go there. Try the mushroom arrancini, the pizzas, the prosecco on tap and just enjoy the beautiful courtyard. Three blocks walk. Great summer night venue. They've been included in the Good Food Guide and we're really lucky to have them in Bathurst. It's been a wonderful addition. Book if you're coming on a big weekend.

Great wood fired pizza. Some friends of ours renovated the building and courtyard a few years back and ran a restaurant there for 10 years. It is a hidden treasure in Bathurst. It's now a wood fired pizza /bar. Stunning again in summertime for lunch or dinner. Try and get a table in the courtyard if the weather's good.

The girls at The Painted Horse have made the Good Food Guide. If you feel like a drive (about half an hour away at Sofala) this is a great spot to have a bite. Delicious home cooked food. Still thinking about the pork and fennel sausage roll we had on the weekend. If you feel like driving further Hill End is another hidden treasure. Have a beer at the pub - you never know who you'll meet.

This is the nearest, nicest pub. Two blocks from BCentral it's pretty buzzy on a Friday night. They have a delicious bar menu which runs all day (I think) and also do really nice meals. Big meals and not the cheapest place in town, but the quality is generally very good. It's directly opposite Machattie Park, so there's a nice outlook.

This Lebanese restaurant, opposite Dan Murphy's, is probably our favourite takeaway place in Bathurst. They do a delicious chicken plate that comes with hummous, tabouli and fresh Lebanese bread. One plate would do three people if you're not huge eaters. If you want a second plate ie: the lamb plate or vegetarian one, ask them to swap out the hummous and tabouli for baba ganoush and moujadra (a really tasty lentil and rice dish). Yummy baklava too.

There are three or four Indian restaurants in town but Saffron is our pick. We like the Butter Chicken, Mustard Fish and Eggplant Masala. It's opposite the post office in Howick Street.

If the kids are home and we want to head out for breakfast together The Hub in Keppel Street is our favourite 'go to'. They're open throughout the day, they're licensed and the food and service is always good. Nice atmosphere.

Coffee

Set in the grounds of the historic Tremain's Flour Mill, Doppio (as the name suggests) is the second coffee shop opened by the guys who own Ristretto in Howick Street. The mill itself is in the early stages of restoration and will eventually become the Australian Milling Museum. It's a sunny spot with outside seating on the grassy courtyard and the coffee is first rate. A nice place to do the SMH Quiz on a Saturday morning.

Alternatively known as "Steve's office" this is one of our favourite places for coffee in Bathurst. Just on that, Bathurst is spoilt for seriously great coffee. Al Dente, The Hub, Ristretto, Doppio & Crema. Al Dente also has a great range of takeaway salads and home-prepped meals if you don't feel like cooking but want something a bit different to normal takeaways.

Live Music

The Victoria Hotel has recently been renovated and is worth keeping an eye on to see if they have any gigs happening. It's been a nice addition to Bathurst and they do food as well but we haven't eaten there yet, so can't comment on the food. Let us know if you go.

Bar

This is such a cool place. Set at the back of historic Webb Chambers in George Street, next to Cobblestone Lane Restaurant, Webb & Co has a back verandah that catches the late afternoon sun. Good bar food. Lovely atmosphere. It's on the same block as the George Hotel, opposite Machattie Park.

Deli, Quality Fruit & Veg etc

If you're after beautiful (expensive) cheeses, the best quality fresh fruit and veg in Bathurst, cured meats, fresh seafood, coffee etc Country Fruit, in George Street, has set a really high benchmark in Bathurst. They've received the Green Grocer of the Year Award from the Sydney Markets on more than one occasion. It's a lovely shop to visit even if you're not buying.

This is our local co-operative. It's where we get our eggs for the B&B. All sorts of organic goodness from smoked trout to local fruit and veg.

French Patisserie

Philippe and Angel Legall moved to Bathurst from Grasse in France in the mid 80s and no-one will let them leave. Their patisserie is an absolute high point of food in Bathurst. Thesedays their son Gwynell and his wife Hannah are the face of Legall's and the quality hasn't missed a beat. Their toffee chouxs are to die for. And we love their fresh crispy bread.
