I recommend Monarch Cakes but you can pick up a selection of sweet treats from one of Acland Street’s many famous cake shops, harking back to the summers of the 1950s when European holidaymakers would descend upon the suburb. Share them with friends on the St Kilda foreshore or at the nearby Catani Gardens or St Kilda Botanical Gardens.

In the ‘90s, restaurateur Chris Lucas lived in Japan for three years. More than half of his time was spent travelling through Asia, immersed in its food culture. Such was the inspiration for Hawker Hall, the fourth addition to The Lucas Group, after Chin Chin, Kong and Baby. Like its sister restaurants, Hawker Hall has an inimitable energy. A lot of that is down to the thumping sound system by Urban Intelligence. Given the right track, you’ll feel the bass as much as you hear it. You might also feel a little hoarse after your visit.

Leonard’s is a 70s-inspired log cabin and bar, complete with lounge room and pool table, by the team from The Sweetwater Inn. The place is kitted out with log stools, a double-sided stone fireplace, timber-panelled walls and a picket fence outside. There’s a license and DJs until 3am on the weekends. Otherwise, the soundtrack will probably be grunge or rock. There’s no formal dining area, no bookings, no table service. Instead it’s straight-up burger boxes, plastic baskets, bulk serviettes and the occasional fork. Choose from burgers (including vegan and vegetarian iterations); fried chicken; loaded fries; and three types of nachos. If you're into this kind of food, take note that Leonard's is one of the best at it in Melbourne. The beer taps keeps the house-party theme going, pouring Leonard's "Bathtub" lager, Brooklyn lager and Young Henrys Newtowner lager – easy-drinkers that you can have a few of without too much thought. There's also fruity cocktail jugs and a small wine list that balances classic, accessible picks with skin-contact whites and other weirdness.

The Astor Theatre is a classic, single-screen revival movie theatre located in the inner Melbourne suburb of St Kilda, that has a long and illustrious history. The site at 1-3 Chapel Street was first used for public entertainment in 1913 when Thomas Alford established the Diamond Theatre, which shared the site with a confectioner and livery stables. Part vaudeville theatre and part cinema, in 1914 it was renamed the Rex before closing in 1917.
