Wonderful Walks

Recommendations for both long and short walks. An opportunity for beautiful sightseeing and exploring the surrounding areas.
Go right out of Sunset Heights and take a beautiful long walk along the coast to the wonderful historical site of Reculver Towers. With stunning views, this historical adventure does not disappoint. There is an onsite café and pub for well deserved refreshments. Taken from the English Heritage website: ''The imposing twin towers of the medieval church at Reculver dominate the skyline of Herne Bay, acting as a navigation marker for ships at sea. This was the site of one of the earliest Roman forts built against Saxon raids on the 'Saxon Shore'. It later became the site of an Anglo-Saxon monastery before becoming the parish church for Reculver. The tall towers were built in a remodeling of the church in the 12th century. Much of the site has been lost to coastal erosion, but alongside the twin towers are the ruined remains of the early Roman fort.''

The Pier is a wonderful place to visit on a daily basis. It is a fantastic spot to have refreshments while the sea is beneath you. There is often live entertainment and celebrations of key events held here, so it is worth checking out the website or visiting the venue to find out what is going on during your stay. Taken from Hernebaypier.com: ''Today, Herne Bay Pier is a bright, colourful, bustling place where fun can be found for all the family; where you can choose from a wide range of delicious meals & snacks, have a drink, ride an old fashioned fairground horses, have a go on the helter skelter, browse the numerous, interesting retail huts or just pass the time enjoying the sea air and all that this traditional seaside town has to offer. Herne Bay Pier is run by Herne Bay Pier Trust, a registered charity. Opening hours Open daily 10 am to 6 pm weather permitting. Attractions are open at weekends, on public holidays and during school holidays. The Retail Village and Food Court are open daily with some outlets open at other times.''

A short walk through the town and out the other side is the Memorial Park. Taken from www.canterbury.co.uk ''At the end of World War I, Herne Bay Memorial Park was established to commemorate localy fallen heroes. The cenotaph was unveiled by General Sir Charles Warren on 11 November 1922, and lists the names of 211 people who fell in World War I plus those from later conflicts. In 2014 the park was given Centenary Field status and is protected by Fields in Trust in perpetuity to honour the memory of the millions who gave their lives in World War I. The war memorial garden, at the end of the Avenue of Rememberance, is a tranquil place to sit and reflect. Today the park also has formal planted gardens, sensory gardens, and a community kitchen garden; a children's play area and several sporting facilities, including football, tennis and bowls; and a fair sized lake, that's home to a large number of ducks, and is used for model boats.''

Turn left out of Sunset Heights and head towards Whistable. On a warm day, the walk from Herne Bay to Whistable along the coastline is beautiful. It is a good handful of miles, but what a wonderful walk it is. Whistable harbor is known for its fresh seafood, but also its live entertainment and shed traders. If the walk back appears a little tiresome, it is easy to catch a bus or train back to Herne Bay from Whistable, or call for a taxi.

Turn right out of Sunset Heights and follow the coastline past Reculver. You will eventually end up in Minnis Bay. The sandy location is a fantastic part of the North Kent coastline with a recommended pub/restaurant that is positioned perfectly on the beachfront (The Minnis).

This is a great gastro pub. It often has live music in the evening which has a great atmosphere. The added bonus is that it is just a short walk along the promenade from Sunset Heights. Taken from www.diversarms.co.uk ''Right on the Herne Bay seafront, the Divers Arms serves up famously good beers, fresh home-cooked food and wave after wave of brilliant live music. Built early in the Victorian era, allegedly on the proceeds of a smuggler and one of the world’s first salvage divers, it’s a pub that wears its maritime heritage with pride - an old brass diving helmet among the fascinating nautical artefacts to explore when you ‘come aboard’. There’s a raft of delicious drinks to discover here too, including beers from Faversham’s Shepherd Neame. Meanwhile, a popular menu of proper pub food prides itself on providing great value for money. Add an inviting open fire in winter, a sunny courtyard garden for summer, a pool table, darts board and live music every Friday and Saturday night, and it’s not hard to see why the Divers Arms is so loved locally. So much so, in fact, that the pub reached the final five of The Sun’s Pub Idol competition in 2016 - the newspaper’s nationwide search for ‘Britain’s Best Boozer’! ''

Neptune's Arm is an offshore breakwater, built during the 1990s to prevent the most vulnerable parts of Herne Bay from being flooded. There is a viewing platform at the far end. Taken from tripadviser.co.uk: ''If you are visiting Herne Bay then you really ought to add Neptune's Arm on to your bucket list. The attraction is free and offers an incredibly scenic walk with the sea on both sides and Herne Bay Clock Tower in the background, as you are making your way along the length of the Walkway/Arm.When you get to the top you have a small metallic like structure with steps leading up to a viewing platform. It is very quirky and looks like something from outer space. It well worth the short climb up the steps to get an even better view of Herne Bay.''

The clocktower has roots with 31 Marine House! Taken from Wikipedia: ''At the time of the erection of the Clock Tower, Ann Thwaytes (1789–1866) was the rich widow of London grocer William Thwaytes.[7] Between 1834 and 1840 she visited Herne Bay regularly with friends, staying with Mr Camplin who owned number 8 (now 30) Marine Terrace on Central Parade, and became an established town benefactor of Herne Bay.[8] While there in 1836 she donated £4,000 for the erection of the Clock Tower, which may have cost £5,000 to build.[1][5][9] A blue plaque has been erected in her memory by City of Canterbury Council, at Central Parade near the Clock Tower.[10] The Clock Tower was conceived within five years of the completion of Herne Bay's first pier of 1832, when the town was in the throes of its initial popularity and development. Herne Bay historian Mike Bundock suggests a possible inspiration for the unusual design of this tower.[4] On the back of 31 Marine Terrace, next door to Mrs Thwaytes' holiday residence, was a Royal Exchange Assurance lead firemark badge which bore a picture of the Royal Exchange tower, designed by Edward Jarman in 1721.[11] Mrs Thwaytes was already familiar with the Royal Exchange tower, as she had lived close to it during her marriage.[4][12][13] In 1836, possibly inspired by the success of the nearby pier and the grandeur of this image, Mrs Thwaytes requested the young architect Edwin James Dangerfield (1807–1879) of London and Herne Bay to draw a plan of a tower in the style of a Grecian temple with a clock at the top.''

Wikipedia: The Central Bandstand, known as the Bandstand, in Herne Bay, Kent, England, was designed by H. Kempton Dyson in 1924, extended with an art deco frontage in 1932, and refurbished between 1998 and 1999. It is one of the coastal landmarks of the town. When first built, it was a popular venue for visiting military band concerts and for tea dances. Edwina Mountbatten spoke there on behalf of the Red Cross in 1939. In the 1920s and 1930s a red carpet would be laid across the road and up to the stage for the conductor of the brass band to walk from the Connaught Hotel which was directly opposite the Bandstand. Turn left out of the property and walk along the coastline for 5/10 minutes.

Just a stones throw away from the property (turn right out of the front door), The Ship Inn is under new management and is receiving great reviews for its friendly beachfront atmosphere and great place to eat while enjoying the scenery. As always, if you plan to eat here, it is always best pre-planning and booking ahead.

Take Away Options

Most of Herne Bay's take aways can be found via well known online food delivery apps. I have included a few here that may not have an online presence. As with most deliveries, it really can depend on the day and volume of orders as to the quality of the food and how fast it can arrive, but you may find this info helpful. Food that can be delivered to your door if you fancy a chilled night in!
Ming Garden is not an online Chinese take-away, but you can call through an order for pick up or delivery. It is a popular choice, so place your order early. It is located near the swimming pool around a 10 minute walk from the property. Normally shut on a Monday.

Cómo moverse

Using the bus to explore

There are many bus stops close to Sunset Heights. If you walk through the town to the main high street you wont be short of bus stops. I would recommend checking the Stagecoach website to plan your journey if you are not familiar with this area. https://www.stagecoachbus.com/plan-a-journey

Pre-booking

Herne Bay can be a popular throughout the year. I recommend that you have something in mind that you would like to do, such as paddleboard lessons/rentals, spa treatments or eating at a particular restaurant, that you plan ahead and prebook.
