Food scene

Really excellent Mexican food - note that they have a sister restaurant, La Mision, in Hudson with the same menu - house is equidistant between the two.

Consistently wonderful food; a bit pricey because plates are smallish but always an amazing meal. They have more outside seating than many restaurants in the area and are dog friendly outside.

Hiking

There are great trails from Harrier Hill Park and Greenport Conservation Area, both less than a 10 minute drive. Harrier Hill has beautiful views right up the hill from the parking lot, and you cross the street to get to trails. Greenport Conservation has trails right from the parking lot. There are tons of other great trails nearby including High Falls Conservation Area and the Martin van Buren trails, check out All Trails! We are also close to various parts of the Empire State Trail.

Additional restaurant recs

Pizza: Baba Louie’s (known for their sourdough crust); Stella’s (basic but great - there's one about 10 minutes away and they just opened another location less than a mile from the house) Other places we love: Wm. Farmer & Sons (upscale farm to table); Feast and Floret (Italian); Wasabi (Japanese); Asian Cafe (Chinese - take out only); Isaan Thai Star; Grazin' (upscale diner / burgers / distillery). Bottom line - the great food options are endless and we are very happy to give additional recs so don't hesitate to ask!

Coffee shops / bakeries

Moto coffee shop on Warren Street has great coffee and food (toasts, salads, sandwiches) Bartlett House in Ghent is a great place for bread and pastry and it’s lovely to sit on their porch or on picnic tables outside. Morningbird in Kinderhook – highly recommend the mochi donuts (but call – they run out). Broad Street Bagels in Kinderhook – surprisingly good bagels for upstate.

Ice cream!

Our favorite is Samascott Garden Market in Kinderhook. Culture Cream on Warren Street is also a fun place with really interesting flavors.

Bars / Breweries

Three new breweries have opened recently near Warren Street in Hudson. Union Street Brewing Co. has nice areas to sit inside and outside and great food. Upper Depot and Return Brewing are right across the street from each other and are also popular. Other bars: - Lawrence Park: on Warren Street in Hudson. Good cocktails and beer/wine list; open later than most - Maker Hotel Lounge: beautiful room, nice spot for a great cocktail - Spotty Dog Books & Ale: bookstore and bar - good beer and wine list.

Swimming

Taghkanic State Park – a great swimming beach, about 25 minutes away right off the Taconic. Oakdale Beach - a small pond beach near downtown Hudson. During the week for most of the summer it’s only open after 3 pm because they hold a summer camp there.

Waterfront / boating

The closest place to sit by the river (it’s an awesome place to watch the sunset!) is at the end of station road, less than a 5 minute drive - cross Rt. 9 to Footbridge Rd Extension, left on Taggart, right on Station. You can also get to the river at Nutten Hook and the Hudson and Stuyvesant waterfront parks. You can rent kayaks from Hudson Paddles (at Hudson waterfront) – you have to reserve in advance.
