It's not a restaurant. It's a version of local fast food place with best 'ćevapi u lepinji' this city can offer. Been here with us locals for decades. Ćevapi is a grilled dish of minced meat, a type of skinless sausage, found traditionally in the countries of southeastern Europe. Lepinja, or pitta, also known as Arabic bread, Lebanese bread or Syrian bread is a soft, slightly leavened flatbread baked from wheat flour, which originated in the Near East.

The outdoor market - Pazar, is located right next to the east wall of the Diocletian Palace, and around the church of St Dominic. It is one of the central places of life in Split, and recently its becoming also a popular destination for tourists eager to feel the local spirit. The outdoor market used to be on today's Fruit Square, but due to the rapid city development there was a need for a bigger space, and today that part of the city's core is the true belly of the city of Split. At the same time it is the place where you can still feel the spirit of Dalmatia and the Mediterranean, the colours, flavours and aromas of fresh fruits and vegetables, but also the sounds, the yelling and bargain

Matejuška has been for centuries a port for small boats owned by fishermen of Split. Even today there are dozens of boats tied up there, their nets drying , bait being prepared, with a monument dedicated to fishermen biding them farewell as they sail out to sea - a big fish hook.It is one of the most popular places today for the youth of Split, but also for their peer tourists, eager to socialise outside bars, sitting casually on sidewalks of Matejuška, usually with a drink bought in the nearby supermarket. This is what makes this old port a place where the contact between the locals and guests is most easily accomplished, to the enjoyment of either side.

The Diocletian Palace Substructures represent one of the best preserved ancient complexes of their kind in the world, and hence are in many ways responsible for the reason the historical core of Split was in 1979 included on the UNESCO'S World Heritage list. Today the Substructures are full of life. They regularly host painting and sculpture exhibitions, theatre plays, fairs like the International Flower Fair, gastronomic and oenological presentations, and many other social and cultural events. The central hall, representing the main communication line between the Riva and the Peristyle, is a place to buy valuable souvenirs, and the rest of the Substructures is open for sightseeing.

Parks & Nature

Marjan is a hill on the peninsula of the city of Split,. It is covered in a dense Mediterranean pine forest and completely surrounded by the city and the sea, making it a unique sight. Originally used as a park by the citizens as early as the 3rd century, it is a favorite weekend excursion destination and a recreational center for the city. Marjan is 178 m tall and offers a view of the entire city, the surrounding islands, and the nearby mountains of Mosor and Kozjak. It has always been a favorite place for walking, running, jogging, climbing or riding a bike. I heartily recommend to take some time to visit this magnificent natural park.

In a series of nice beaches on the south side of Marjan hill, Kasjuni beach is one of most beautiful with a rich pine forest. In this bay you can find all kinds of beaches, partly pebble, rocky and even small sandy beach. All beaches have a wide parking place and, believe it or not, even in the highest season you can easily find a place. Also Bene beach. This beach is located on the northern side of Marjan Hill. Strossmayer's garden or Đardin as the citizens of Split only call it, has settled in-between the two bastions, the remains of the Venetian fortification, north of the Diocletian palace beside its main entrance - The Golden Gate. This area takes over the function of the main city garden in 1859, and in mid-20th century a beautiful fountain was added with the so called "Putto" (a figure resembling an angel). The present outlook is the result of the last renovations in 2002, with the lyrics of a great Croatian poet Tin Ujević carved on the surrounding walls.

Arts & Culture

Probably the most rewarding of Split's cultural attractions is Ivan Meštrović's own Gallery, a neo-classical villa built by the man himself in 1931. Not only does it display the range of work created by Croatia's most renowned sculptor - statues large and small, even portraits - and its influences (Classical, folk, Modernist), but it tells his remarkable story as he grew up through what would become Yugoslavia. Visits can be combined with entry to the nearby Kaštelet which houses his religious works.

This museum in the heart of the palace is mostly worth visiting for the 15th-century Gothic building itself rather than for the sundry paintings and weaponry within. Standing near the Meštrović Gallery, and also converted - from a 16th-century summer house - by the famous sculptor himself, this is where you'll find the most satisfying of all his works, a series of 28 reliefs carved out of wood loosely illustrating the life of Christ. You'll notice touches of folk art, Modernism and Classicism as you gaze at what represents two decades of labour on the part of this 20th-century master. The building, too, has religious echoes.

The National Theatre in Split played a vital role in the promotion of the Croatian language while the country was still ruled from elsewhere. This venerable institution opened in 1893, first at Dobroma, before this imposing edifice was built decades later. Early performances featured troupes from Italy while a local theatrical culture developed. Today the HNK not only stages Croatian-language theatre, but also foreigner-friendly opera and ballet. It's a major venue during the Split Summer Festival.

Split Summer Festival (1954...) is an art festival building its national and international reputation ever since the mid 20th century. Next to the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, it is a festival with the longest and shiniest tradition of the classical spectrum of performing arts (opera, drama, ballet, concert...), spreading in time the array of events: from Jazz concerts and film festivals, to exhibitions, performances and street theatre. The most persistent and the strongest organisation of the festival is the Croatian National Theatre in Split, the national theatre representing a crucial key venue in the cultural life of Split, and the vital point of the theatre life of Croatia as a whole.
