Domme is a bastide (fortified town) situated on a cliff over the Dordogne River. It is an easy but uphill walk from Cenac (10-15 minutes) but is well worth the effort. Domme was thought impenetrable but was captured by troops of the notorious Simon Montfort, who scaled the cliffs and entered via an underground passage in the middle of the night. The Castle was ultimately destroyed but its walls remain and were recently excavated from vegetation that had grown over them, as were the walls of this entire lovely bastide. Thursday is Market day, which can get quite crowded in summer.

Castelnaud is a lovely castle, restored to its nearly original state in recent decades. Like many of the castles in this short stretch along the Dordogne river it is situated on a bluff with magnificent views both up and down river. Chateau Beynac is clearly visible, where the English were kept under watch (and vice versa)! There are great displays of catapults and a small but fascinating museum of medieval implements of warfare and torture. Well worth the visit.

Everything Else

Sarlat-la-Canéda is the largest village in the area, just 15 minutes from Cenac, and has extensive shopping, galleries & dining options, with some of the best cuisine in the world! The Saturday Market brings in people from all around but is quite crowded in the summer months so go early to beat the crowds and the heat.
