The Brough of Birsay is an uninhabited tidal island off the north-west coast of The Mainland of Orkney, Scotland, in the parish of Birsay. It is located around 13 miles north of Stromness and features the remains of Pictish and Norse settlements as well as a modern light house. The visit is dependent upon the Tides

Early viking settlement. Access by causeway which is only open a few hours either side of low tide. Take the footpath up to the lighthouse to view cliffs and seabirds.

Great views, lovely walks and lots of wildlife, including puffins in the summer months. Check tide times before going.
