Lake Wendouree, formally Yuilles Swamp, was created in the 1860s as Ballarat's original water supply. It is a bird sanctuary providing rich aquatic habitat for some of the rarest birds in Victoria, including Freckled, Blue Billed and Musk Ducks, Night Herons, Little Rails, Crested Grebe, sacred Ibis and the enigmatic Black Swans. Glorious views across the lake to Mt Warrenheip and Bunninyong, along with sometimes wonderful reflections add to the enjoyment of walking , cycling or even fishing for redfin, and rainbow trout.
