MINUTES AWAY! Situated only a few minutes away from our cottage in the town of Louisbourg. Follow the sign to the lighthouse once you arrive in the town of Louisbourg. This is a great stop on the way to or from the Fortress of Louisbourg. On your way back, stop at the delicious family own and operated Spoondrift Cafè & Gift Shop for an amazing lunch or supper right in Louisbourg.

***If you have the time to get out to louisbourg, you won't be dissapointed. The light house walk is by far our favorite as a family. If you make a day of it, there is the Fortress of Louisbourg, and a hike there as well, that you can't miss as it is right next to the road that takes you in. Past the fortress is a popular local beach, Kenington Cove, Known for its beauty and its waves, (and sometimes wasps)! If you venture to louisbourg, make sure to stop at the big red bus for their home made fries and burgers, again a favourite of ours!! Please check the times of the Fortress and Big Red Bus before you go, as things change often when you run on island time. Kennington cove has even been known to be closed, so check before you go!***

The lighthouse is a nice place to take pictures and look across to the Fortress. As part of the Fortress of Louisbourg reconstruction, this 55 foot tall lighthouse was completed in 1933. It sits on the site of Canada’s first lighthouse and the second in North America. Portions of the original lighthouse foundation, built by the French in 1734, are still visible. The site also features hiking trails that provide stunning views of the area, complete with interpretive panels highlighting the region’s history and surrounding natural wonders.

Enjoy the beauty of Cape Breton’s rugged shoreline at the Lighthouse Trail! Located across the harbour from the Fortress of Louisbourg, this trail offers spectacular views as well as insight into local history. Hikers can continue beyond this trail and access the Coastal Connections Trail Association. Follow “Lighthouse” signs along Havenside Road to reach the iconic lighthouse that dates back to 1734.
