The museum was created to house the results of the excavations carried out for thirty years in the ancient city of Eleutherna.
t is located in the heart of Crete - about halfway from ancient Kydonia (Chania) to the west and Knossos to the east, and still from Phaistos and Gortys to the south. At the foot of Psiloritis of ancient Idis and at an altitude of about 380 meters above sea level. And it is a pre-millennial "journey" of ancient Eleutherna (because of this reason) from 3,000 BC. until the 14th century AD, which came to light step by step during a 30-year excavation by the University of Crete in collaboration with Professor Nikos Stambolidis.And it is also the early Iron Age (from 900 BC to the late 6th or early 7th century BC) that proved to be the most important period of the city directly associated with Homer and the dawn of Greek culture. A visit to the Museum of Eleftherna can be easily combined with the historic Arkadi Monastery as they are within walking distance
