The dirt tracks, wood, and heathland of Wimbledon Common (and adjoining Putney Heath), southeast of Richmond Park, take me back to childhood. Run beside low foliage, gorse and hedges, and on the fine yellow gravel you get beneath moorland. There are lots of different paths to get lost on for hours. Spring mornings are the best, as you break the dew with your footsteps. You feel like the first person to have charted the park. Grab a coffee in the Windmill Tearooms, under the 19th century windmill, in the centre of the common, to warm up.

Wimbledon Common: 20 minute walk or a 5 minute drive to the free car park in the common next to the Windmill cafe. It's much bigger than you expect and it's beautiful. A lovely mixture of forest, ponds and open spaces for walking. The Windmill cafe in Wimbledon Common is great place for a sandwich and coffee. You can even walk all the way through Wimbledon Common, cross over the A3 road and walk around Richmond Park which is also beautiful and has slightly different terrain.

Stand in the centre of Wimbledon and it looks like an ordinary high street with places to mooch and munch. But dig a little deeper and you'll find that this town is more than somewhere to do your routine shopping; there are plenty of places of interest to visit as well. Wimbledon Common is a huge area, made all the larger by the fact that is connects to Putney Heath on one side, and Richmond Park on the other. The common is divided into sections of acidic heathland and well maintained grassland. This makes for an excellent day out, in which you can take a woodland walk, followed by a picnic. There are nine ponds in total, and a variety of wildlife to lookout for.
