Paphos Castle (Paphos Fort) was built during the Frankish occupation in the 13th century. on the site of the Byzantine castle "Saranta Kolones" ("forty columns"). It has only one entrance on the east side and very small windows. Its main part is a large square tower with a courtyard in the center. The Venetians destroyed the fortress in 1570 so that the Turks, who began to seize the island, could not use it. According to a Turkish inscription above the entrance, the Turks rebuilt the fortress in 1780. Nearby are the ruins of a second fortress, which was probably built at the same time. In 1935, UNESCO included the Paphos Castle in the World Heritage List. Since then, the castle has been one of the main attractions of Paphos. Paphos Castle is located on the central promenade, where you can walk, swim, go shopping and eat in cafes. Coordinates where you can park your car: 34.755143, 32.407189.
