Just on our doorstep! Baconsthorpe Castle is a fortified manor house, now a ruin.

If you are an early bird, try to get here at dawn to see the barn owls return from a nights hunting. A truly amazing sight

Baconsthorpe Castle is a ruined, fortified manor house established in the 15th century. It has an interesting backstory, after ambitious lawyer John Heydon built the tall fortified house to protect him from his many enemies in fear of attack! Later however, his descendants who were less concerned of security developed the property into a more elegant, courtyard house, complete with a nearby deer park. Baconsthorpe Castle is well worth a visit, and makes for a lovely spot for a picnic on a sunny afternoon.
