Charles Johnston, a contemporary of Thomas Jefferson, built Sandusky Plantation on 1200 acres in 1808. He and Jefferson often communicated and did business together when Jefferson was in residence at Poplar Forest, his summer home. A perfect example of architecture and furnishings of the period, Sandusky Plantation also houses an archaeological museum.
