This bar right on the corner of Castro and Market has been around forever. It's significant because—to my knowledge—it was the world's first gay bar with full see-through windows, telling everyone, “We’re gay and we’re not afraid to be seen." It's a lounge with comfy sofas and a long bench where you can actually talk. Go in the afternoon on a sunny day and try for a window seat so you can watch the world go by.

Affectionately referred to as the "glass coffin", Twin Peaks is a must for any visitor to San Francisco. Located at the corner of Market and Castro St (Southeast corner across from the Chevron Station), it was the first bar to feature windows so patrons could see in and out. Google "Twin Peaks Tavern" and read about its history on Wikipedia.
The first gay bar in the US to have windows, putting it's patrons on display. This bar has a long history in the Castro and is featured on many tours. They also pour great drinks. Typically an older crowd and better suited toward having a nice cocktail and a good conversation.
Historic gay bar with beautiful windows overlooking the Rainbow Flag. Same people frequent here who frequented it when it opened a zillion years ago - it is adorable.
